ENGLISH LITERACY
One of the strongest indicators of future employment in Cambodia is the ability to speak , read and write English. Matesabroad funds intensive English classes for both primary school children and young adults [ evening classes] supporting over 950 children in four schools in the squatter communities of Phnom Penh . The Australian students who join our immersions spend several days in the classroom providing an invaluable opportunity for the Khmer students to interact with native English speakers and has proved a huge success with the Khmer students eager to test their skills on their Australian visitors!

The importance of fostering a love of reading to act as a scaffold for improving English literacy has driven Matesabroad to commence the library project. Next year we will commence the creation of quiet inviting spaces within each school which can support the STAR [ Sit Together And Read] program. Library books will be purchased and current older scholarship students will be invited to lead group reading classes on weekend mornings in each library space.

The majority of Cambodians living in the poorer communities where we work suffer from iron deficiency and anaemia. Protein such as meat and fish is expensive. The lucky fish is a fish shaped small iron cooking tool that infuses each meal with a healthy amount of natural iron. One fish can provide a family of five with enough iron supplement for two years. Matesabroad in collaboration with the Lucky Iron Fish Enterprise [ LIFE] aims to provide parent education and eachstudent’s family with an iron fish by the end of 2019.
